Myrtles' silver-spotted Butterfly
In danger of extinction. Endemic to in San Mateo County, Calif. A wing span of 3.2 inches lives in costal dunes and bluffs sheltered form the wind below 820' elevation. Over the years, the invasive non-native plants took over the native Tidestrom Lupine and Beach Layia, causing them to be placed on the federally endangered species list. The endangered Myrtle’s Silverspot Butterfly and the threatened Snowy Plover are dependent on native plants like these, and today, they too are in jeopardy of disappearing from the area.
